[COLUMN/KOLUMNA] Mind the Gap by Sara Al Hamad: All the party people!/Samo zabava!

All the party people!

Having a job in London in December is a two-word horror story – Christmas parties. There are parties you have to attend because they are your clients’. Then there are some you have to attend because they are your business partners’. And then of course there is your own Christmas party, which you have to attend by default. So you go running around like a headless monkey, trying to make everyone happy and have a private life at the same time. It’s all fun and games until you realise December has 21 days left and you are already plumb tuckered out!

Remember how in one of my first columns I mentioned an app called Daisie? Well, they also threw a party last week- Daisie 100: growth. The event was held in a small, industrial space in Shoreditch and it showcased the work of Daisie community. From photography to interesting installations, it was very nice to see all the young creatives working together on developing their talents.

Besides the exhibition, there were also 4 musical performances by LCYTN, Mag, Yiigaa and Silky. I particularly enjoyed Yiigaa, a young musician from Brixton, London who recently released a new EP called Blue Rivers in My Wrist. It’s hard to say what genre her music is, but I guess I would go with soul, even though it has this modern twist in it which gives it a nice r&b flair.  While listening to her sing, I noticed a Badu presence in her voice that is kind of addictive. Unfortunately, I had trouble hearing it clearly because the sound at the party was horrible. I guess they didn’t let the sound technician in because he forgot to RSVP. Anyway, since Spotify can only give me that much, I will just have to come to her next gig in order to make my final judgment, but honestly, so far it’s quite good.

And so comes Saturday. The day I will get to have a proper night out in London, finally. It was so good, you have no idea how much I had to force myself to sit down and write this column. Walking towards the venue, which was at the centre of the punk and New Romantic music scenes of the 70s and 80s, a building that was once home to the infamous club called The Fridge, and today it’s rebranded as Electric Brixton. The name of the event I was attending: Claptone presents The Masquerade. And a masquerade it was. People walking around looking like plague doctors, beautiful dancers all in fire and feathers ruling the stage, utmost joy everywhere. It all felt like a Hollywood movie, the only difference being it was real.

Unfortunately, I was too overwhelmed to take pictures, so if you missed my Instagram story, you will just have to use your imagination. Claptone is an awesome techno/house DJ from Germany. His sound is shamanistic, dark and twisted and it takes you places. If you have a chance, definitely go to his show! For this event he had some friends performing with him: Riva Starr, Hilton Caswell and Franky Rizardo, better known as my electronic romance. I don’t know what’s up with me and Dutch DJs, but lately everytime I like a random DJ he is from Holland. Anyway, I was sad I didn’t get to see him perform on the Amsterdam Dance Event, so hearing him live now made me quite happy especially because he was amazing and it’s not just my hormones. Honest!

Instead of my usual song of the week, please enjoy a performance by Erykah Badu on this years’ Soul Train Awards, brought to my attention earlier today. You might think you don’t have 20 minutes to watch it, but find it. It’s so worth it!

Totalno vrijedi! Do sljedećeg tjedna – ta-da!
